A citizen of France and resident of Brooklyn, NY, Philippe Bodin is a composer of unusually lyrical contemporary classical music which has garnered notice for its formal clarity and driving rhythmic energy. Performed by such diverse ensembles as the Eroica Trio, the Da Capo Chamber Players, the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, the Las Vegas Festival Orchestra and the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, his work has been recognized with awards from the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition (Honorable Mention in the 2006 Prize, commission 2004), the Lutoslawski International Competition (Warsaw 2005), the Homage to Mozart International Competition (Moscow 2006), the Utah Arts Festival Chamber Commission Competition (2006), the Brave New Works Call for Scores Competition (Ann Arbor 2006), the Music of Changes Composers Portraits Competition (Los Angeles 2001), ASCAP, Meet the Composer, the Argosy Foundation, and residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts, the MacDowell Colony, the Atlantic Center for the Arts and others.
Upcoming performances and commissions include works for the Orkest de Volharding (Netherlands), the Mannes Trio (NY), the Mojave Trio (Los Angeles), the Kungsbacka Trio (Sweden), Lost Dog (NY), pianist Guy Livingston (France), the saxophone quartet Axone (France), the string quartet Diotima (France), and the Ho-Ahuvia Piano Duo (NY).
Philippe studied voice at Oberlin College (BM) and composition at Yale University (DMA) with Martin Bresnick, Jacob Druckman and Nicolas Maw. He has taught composition at Yale University, Illinois Wesleyan and Lawrence University. Prior to his incarnation as a composer, he studied mathematics, architecture, organ and piano in his native France, and had a career as an operatic baritone under the batons of Myung-Whun-Chung, Philippe Herreweghe and Marc Minkovski. He was also music director of two small opera companies in France and is still active as stage director and coach for opera.
